19. Levi Sapp

Notes for Civil War Soldier Levi Sapp:
Levi Sapp was born Octobers 20, 1829 in Emanuel County, Georgia. He was the son of Jason Sapp and his wife Jane. It was thought that Levi was born in the present Cook County, Georgia area. In his application for a confederate pension he stated that he was born in Emanuel County, Georgia.

History of Cook County. Compiled by Miss Minnie Shaw.

Mr. Levi Sapp married Miss Eliza Thompson of Echols County settled a place two miles east of Adel where H.J. Kent now lives They later bought a place one mile southwest of Adel on the Quitman road. They reared eleven children. Mr. Sapp was a civil war soldier.

Levi and Eliza were found in the 1850 Baker County Census with their first child, Mary Jane. Levi was working as a laborer for Wm. T. Thompson. In 1850 Baker County covered our present Baker, Mitchell, Dougherty, and part of Calhoun County.

On the 13th November 1858 Levi bought from Harmon N. Sapp 30 acres in the SE corner of Lot 328 that Levi the Revolutionary War Solider had sold Harmon. It is located about two miles east of Adel, Georgia, This property was now in Berrien County which was created in 1856 from part of Lowndes County.

When the 1860 Berrien County Census was taken Levi and Eliza had four children: Sara Ann-9, George W.-5. Patience-4, and Nancy-1. By the time the Civil War began to effect the lives of people in Georgia, Levi and Eliza had five living children and Eliza was expecting. Lucinda was born the 8th of June 1862. Three days later Levi left to serve in the confederate Army. Wanting to ease Eliza's burden, he bought a slave for $100 to do the plowing. The slave plowed one row, tied the Horse at the end of the row, and ran away. Along with six children from infancy to ten years, Eliza had to nurture and provide for them. Somehow she and the older children did what had to be done and survived.

Levi enlisted at Savannah, Georgia on the 30th of June 1862 for three years of war in the 21st. Batt'n., Georgia Calvary. He was in Capt. Banks Company, Parmitive Rangers Company B. Muster rolls show Levi in this Batt'n. through December of 1863. The Battalion was dissolved the 13th of February 1864 and became part of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Calvary. Muster Rolls for March-April 1864Levi in Co. E of the 7th Reg't., Georgia Calvary. The April 30-August 31 1864 Muster Roll shows him wounded at the hospital. From his application for a confederate pension, we learn Levi was wounded at Trevillian Station, Virgina. That battle was fought June 11th and 12th in 1864. The Muster Roll for Sept.-Oct. 1864 shows Pvt. Levi Sapp absent, home on sick furlough. He was shot in the right hip. Gangrene developed in the wounded area.

Eliza was notified to meet Levi in Valdosta, Georgia. She traveled from their home east of Adel to Valdosta in an oxcart with a mattress in it so Levi would be able to lie down on the return trip. Eliza was given whiskey to bathe the wound every day. In time the wound healed, and Levi lived to be ninety-two years old.

He is buried in Lime sink Cemetery, Adel, Georgia.
